Baptism? Christening?
Which word should you use? Don’t panic, you can use either word to talk about the same thing!
Baptism is a celebration of what Jesus has done for someone, and it's something we do as part of the start of their journey of faith. This might mean that parents and godparents want to bring an infant or child into baptism, or it might be an adult wanting to affirm their faith in Jesus for themselves. As children of God in Christ, it is also how we welcome people into the family of the church.
What happens at a baptism?
Baptisms take place during a regular Sundays service when the whole body of the Church is present to welcome the new member of the Church.
At baptisms, solemn promises are made before God. In the case of infants, these promises are made by parents and godparents, who promise to raise the child in the faith, bring the child to participate fully in the life of the local church, and tell the child what God has done for them in Jesus as they grow up.
Accordingly, we ask that the parents have attended St. Denys for at least 3 months before the baptism. This is in order that the family can get to know the local church which they are joining in baptism. There may be other baptism preparation, which will be discussed during the baptism visit.
